The Vjelo for motion related measurement

The Vjelo measures and analyzes motion related statistics for the use in athletic training, scientific research or areas applicable to acceleration, rotation or vibration analysis. Using one or more motion sensors the Vjelo measures acceleration, angular rate of rotation, inclination, counts repetitions, time intervals and tracks minimum and maximum values. Measurements are made with up to 25-100 samples per second and greater than 1 degree of angular resolution.  Bright LED displays feedback selectable measurements and statistics under multiple modes of operation.  A computer serial data port interface provides for all Vjelo measurements and statistical data to be displayed and recorded and graphed in real time using the Key Eleven Staccato software for further analysis and reporting.

Acceleration for athletic training

Athletic acceleration training has become a focus of athletes seeking rapid improvement in dynamic sports where agility, rapid response and speed is valued beyond strength alone.  It is acceleration focused athletic training where the Vjelo is a critical tool in athletic performance measurement, analysis and metrics.

The measurement of velocity of an athletes training routine is key to evaluating performance and determining routine parameters for weight used and number of repetitions performed.  The velocity measurement becomes an aid in determining the optimal amount of weight and number of repetitions the athlete should lift in order to perform and maintain a velocity that is most advantageous to increasing the strength of “fast twitch” muscles.

Acceleration and angular rate of rotation measurement

Using a Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) dual axis accelerometer the Vjelo measures tilt and acceleration.

When this accelerometer sensor is connected to a moving object such as the load arm of an athletic training device, the Vjelo tracks the angular movement of the lifted arm, counts repetitions and calculates angular velocity by measuring the angular rate of rotation of the arm over time.  Linear velocity can also be determined by factoring in the length of the rotating arm.

When a very high degree of angular rotation data is required, an optional MEMS based gyroscopic sensor can be connected to the Vjelo sensor port.  This gyro data is available on the computer data port for recording and analysis via the Key Eleven Staccaot software.

Staccato – Real Time Graph and Recording Software

The Key Eleven Staccato software displays real time data from a connected Vjelo device, displaying load arm angle, angular velocity, calculated linear velocity, and sample time.  This data can then be recorded and stored to a file for later analysis.  Analysis of data can often provided further understanding of the motion/performance and find characteristics not easily detected during real time performance.

Above:  Staccato software screenshot showing three repetitions graphed in real time.  Note the display of lift in meters per second, time of life and angle of lift.  Other data available is calculated power in watts based on weight lifted.

The Trend Graph software can output data as a comma separated data file for use by Microsoft Excel or other graphing and data analysis tools.  The image below shows a Microsoft Excel graph of 3 repetitions showing angle of the moving load arm over time.  Other data can include acceleration and calculated velocity of each lift.

The Vjelo Hardware Platform

The Vjelo hardware platform is designed for the flexibility of reading multiple sensor types (currently an accelerometer and optional gyro) and can be fitted into a hand held enclosure or mounted on or internally into the machine being measured.

Future Development

User feed back and requests are valuable and have led to the following features to be on the near-term Vjelo development roadmap.

Heart Rate Monitor

An internal receiver for wireless heart rate sensors will be integrated so that the Vjelo will display heart rate in real time and provide the heart rate data on the computer data port for analysis of heart rate in relation to velocity data.

Reaction Time

Reaction time will provide the measurement of the length of time beginning at a point of a randomly signaled indicator of both light and sound to the moment that acceleration has begun.  This reaction time interval will be displayed and provide on the data port for record and analysis.

RFID for athlete identification and tracking

An internal Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) reader will be internally integrated to provide a means of knowing which athlete is using the machine for record keeping purposes.  Athletes will carry a credit card sized or small identification card containing an assigned unique RFID tag.

Premise wireless data acquisition system and Internet hosted customer/user performance application system

Each Vjelo will have a sensor node providing ad-hoc wireless networking support for delivering machine acceleration/velocity data to an internet gateway which will forward data to a data center.  The data center will provide internet accessible customer/user applications for training routine record keeping and performance analysis.
